ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini: Which AI Assistant Should You Use?
We compare ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini on writing, research, long documents, coding and features, with a clear pick for each kind of work.

The short answer
- ChatGPT is the best all-rounder: the widest set of features (voice, images, custom GPTs, agents) and the biggest ecosystem.
- Claude is the strongest writer and editor, handles very long documents calmly, and is a favourite with developers.
- Gemini is the obvious pick if your work lives in Gmail, Docs and Drive, and it’s generous on the free plan.
- All three have a capable free plan. Try your real task in each for a week before paying for one.
Three assistants now do most of the everyday AI work in offices, classrooms and small businesses: OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude and Google’s Gemini. On a simple question they give similar answers. The differences show up in the work around the answer: how well they write, how much they can read at once, which apps they connect to and what the paid plans unlock.
This guide compares them on the jobs people actually use them for, so you can pick one (or two) with confidence. Pricing and plans change often, so the cards below always show the latest prices we’ve checked on each website.

[compare chatgpt claude]Gemini’s strengths are different enough that it deserves its own section below, rather than a third column.
Writing and editing
Claude is the one most professional writers reach for. Its drafts sound less like a template, it follows a style guide closely and it’s good at editing: tightening a paragraph without flattening your voice, or keeping a long report consistent from start to finish. Its Projects feature lets you keep reference documents and instructions together for repeat work.
ChatGPT writes well too, and is quicker to give you many options: ten headlines, five intros, three tones. Custom GPTs let you save a writing setup and reuse it. Gemini is solid for first drafts, and shines when the draft needs to land directly in Google Docs or Gmail.
Tip: Whichever you use, paste one or two examples of writing you like and say “match this style”. It does more than any adjective in your prompt.
Research and reading long documents
All three can read files you upload: PDFs, spreadsheets, slides. Claude and Gemini are known for handling very long inputs (whole contracts, long reports, book-length material) and answering questions about them without losing the thread. ChatGPT handles uploads well and adds strong data analysis: it can run code on a spreadsheet and chart the result.
For questions about current events or anything that needs sources, use the built-in web search in any of them, and check the citations. If research is most of your work, also look at a dedicated answer engine such as Perplexity, or NotebookLM for working inside your own sources.
Coding
Developers have strong opinions here, and they change with every model release. As a rule of thumb, Claude is widely used for writing and refactoring code and powers many coding tools; ChatGPT is excellent for explaining code and quick scripts; Gemini is convenient inside Google’s developer tools. For serious coding work, an AI code editor gets more out of any of these models than a chat window.
Images, voice and everything else
ChatGPT has the broadest feature set in one app: image generation and editing, a natural voice mode, screen sharing on mobile and agent features that can carry out multi-step tasks. Gemini also generates images and has a live voice mode, and connects to Google apps such as Maps, YouTube and Workspace. Claude focuses on text, code and documents; it can read images and build small apps and visuals with Artifacts, but it doesn’t generate photos.
Which one should you choose?
| If you mostly… | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Write reports, articles or client emails | Claude | Most natural writing and careful editing |
| Want one app that does a bit of everything | ChatGPT | Widest features: voice, images, GPTs, agents |
| Work in Gmail, Docs and Drive all day | Gemini | Built into Google Workspace |
| Analyse spreadsheets and data | ChatGPT | Runs code on your files and draws charts |
| Read very long documents | Claude or Gemini | Handle long inputs comfortably |
| Write and fix code | Claude | Popular with developers and coding tools |
Our verdict
If you can only pay for one, choose by where your work happens: Google apps → Gemini; lots of writing and documents → Claude; a little of everything → ChatGPT. Many professionals end up with one paid plan and the free plan of a second, and use them to check each other.
Frequently asked questions
Is the free plan enough?
For occasional use, yes. All three free plans use capable models with daily limits. Upgrade when you hit the limits regularly, need the strongest model, or want features like longer uploads, projects or team sharing.
Which is the most accurate?
None of them is always right. They all make mistakes, especially with numbers, dates and citations. Use web search for facts, ask for sources and check anything that matters before you rely on it.
Can I use them for client work?
Check each provider’s business or team plan: these usually exclude your data from model training by default and add admin controls. Don’t paste confidential client information into a personal free account.
Do I need all three?
No. Pick the one that fits your daily tools, learn to prompt it well, and add a second only if you keep missing a specific feature.
